LION’S ROCK LOOP
This 5km loop circles Lion’s Rock in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka, following the road that runs around the base of the famous rock fortress. The route stays relatively flat and offers views of the surrounding jungle landscape and the towering rock formation throughout the run.
The route follows village and park roads with no pavements, but it forms a clear loop around the rock and is easy to follow once you’re on it. Early mornings are the best time to run here to avoid the heat and when wildlife is most active.
Route safety info:
- No pavements or footpaths, so you’ll be running on the road
- Wildlife is common in this area, including stray dogs and wild elephants
- Local communities have placed warning signs around the park about elephants to help protect both people and the animals
- Elephants tend to be most active early morning and at night, so running after sunrise is recommended
